Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's a Duval County board

I discovered a band of superheroes this week. They were wearing their best Clark Kent disguises so I almost missed them. The team was revealed as they applied their superpowers.  They battled burgeoning budgets, leaped over logistical challenges, and worked together under the banner of conservation.

Yes you guessed correctly. It was the Duval Soil and Water Conservation District Board. Led by a legend in the field, Chairman Allen Moore became a soil scientist before a number of is fellow Supervisors were born.

For more than a half-century the district board has led the way with -12 education outreach. The annual Envirothon three contests and Stewardship Week somehow happen each year.

What impressed me the most what the supervisors concern for financial responsibility. The board debated the best way to increase attendance at an upcoming event. It is rare to hear words like carpooling or phrases such as, “all I need is gas money " during a public meeting.

Most gratifying was their collaboration without regard to age, gender or race. Their focus was on soil, water, and ground, common-ground. My hope is that other agencies in Duval County will emulate the working model of the Duval Soil and Water Conservation District. I think newly elected Supervisor Jennifer Casey said it best, “What if one of the historically less significant boards in town became a model of government done right?”

The Jacksonville Business Club intends to work with the Duval Soil and Water Conservation District to build a better business community. Thanks for showing us the way!
